The Roadrunner Diabetes Screening and Education Project
SERVICES
The main services that are offered in this program are the free screenings and educational classes. The screenings are normally held on the weekends all around the San Antonio area either at a local public schools or at health and wellness fairs that are nearby. The educational classes are typically monthly classes that are held at elementary schools in several locations across San Antonio. Both of these services are free for the community of San Antonio to participate in and more information on what these services include can be found below. Screening Events
Community screening events. Multiple risk-factor based screening (glucose/HbA1c, body weight, blood pressure, ...diet and physical activity) will be provided at no cost to residents at least once a month at selected community locations. The UTSA’s Community Health Ambassadors and Community Health Workers will conduct the screening, supported by UTSA Mobile Health Lab. A brief counseling will be provided to participants to explain the screening results and make appropriate referrals for additional health care/services and to engage the community residents in making health behavioral changes.
Monthly community-based healthy lifestyle education classes. The Community Health Workers assisted by the Community Health Ambassadors will teach the monthly education classes on selected topics (weight management, healthy diet/cooking, physical activity, depression, and menopause, etc.) at selection community locations
